Boilermakers Recruit Apprentices

ALBANY, NY – The Boilermakers Northeastern Joint Apprenticeship Committee, Local 197, will conduct recruitment from January 6 through December 1, 2009 for 15 apprentices, New York State Labor Commissioner M. Patricia Smith announced today. Applications will be available at the local, 890 Third St., Albany, from 9 a.m. to noon, the first Tuesday of each month, excluding holidays, during the recruitment period. The committee requires that applicants must have a high school or general equivalency diploma and be at least 18 years old, with proof of age and diploma required when a bona fide offer of employment is presented or at the time of indenture. Applicants are required to be physically able to do the work as determined by a verbal declaration and take an alcohol and drug test within 48 hours of signing an apprenticeship agreement. Reliable transportation to remote work sites and apprentice instructions is also required. Apprentice programs registered with the Department of Labor must meet standards established by the Commissioner. Under state law, sponsors of programs cannot discriminate against applicants because of race, creed, color, national origin, age, sex, disability or marital status. Women and minorities are encouraged to submit applications for apprenticeship programs. Sponsors of programs are required to adopt affirmative action plans for the recruitment of women and minorities.
