Corn conference scheduled for Tuesday

COOPERSTOWN – The 2006 Corn Conference will be held Tuesday at the
Otesaga Hotel, Route 80, Cooperstown. Registration, coffee and danish
begin at 9:30 a.m. with the educational program starting at 10 a.m. and
ending at 3 p.m.
The cost of the meeting, sponsored by Cornell Cooperative Extension
of Chenango, Fulton, Herkimer, Otsego, Montgomery and Schoharie
counties is $20 per person.

Environmental Conservation (DEC) has approved this meeting for two
recertification credits for categories 1a, 10, and 21 (private).
According to Cornell Cooperative Extension Regional Field Crop
Specialist Kevin Ganoe, the conference will highlight the latest corn
production research and technology with an emphasis on energy issues.
Three area corn producers, Stephen Will, Frankfort, Robert Hoffman,
Oxford, and Frank Albano, Stamford, will share the benefits they have
found by reducing tillage on their farms.
Bruce R. Wright, professor of Agricultural Engineering Technology at
SUNY Cobleskill, will address motor performance issues related to
changing environmental standards and to the use of alternative fuels.
Justin Gansowski, of the New York Wildlife Services, U.S. Department
of Agriculture, will discuss possible options for preventing bird
damage to crops.
Russ Hahn, weed scientist from the Department of Crops and Soil
Science at Cornell University, will talk about weed control programs
for reduced tillage situations.
Mike McMahon, of EZ Acres, Homer and Kevin Kemp, DEC Spills Response
Unit, will present information on the DEC’s petroleum bulk storage
regulations.
Bill Cox, the corn specialist for the Department of Crops and Soil
Science at Cornell University, will provide some corn management
updates.
