Sad day in Richfield Springs
|
This is truly a sad day for Richfield Springs. Not only are we losing a great newspaper, but also the immensely talented and dedicated staff that made it so. Starting with Mike Root as editor, the Mercury raised the standard far above what you normally find in a small-town weekly paper. During his tenure, he insisted on accuracy in reporting, a fair and evenhanded treatment of the issues, detailed coverage of school and sporting events, and a vibrant discussion of community interests. Mike somehow managed to balance these objectives, even though it was not always easy, and in doing so created a local paper that any community would be proud of. But, without the very able and energetic support Mike received from Janine Giordano he never would have succeeded. Janine’s skills and experience could easily have landed her a position on any number to prestigious editorial staffs, but instead she chose to share her talent with us. First as a reporter and then editor, she poured her soul into this paper and gave it life and vitality. Her weekly Community Profiles were must-reads. Not only did they bring well deserved attention to the accomplishments of so many of our local residents, but they were written with such flair, feeling and fluency that they made you feel like you were reading a literary classic. Her impetuous eloquence brought even the most mundane story alive and persuaded you that it deserved your full attention. Her talents will undoubtedly be recognized by others and she will continue to charm readers wherever she goes. Thank you, Janine; we’ll miss you. Godspeed. John R. Sovocool
