Remember the nation’s poor
|
As national policy makers revamp national and global financial systems in light of the world’s financial woes, the poor of the world must also be fairly included. The spread of wealth between the “haves” and “have not’s” has reached preposterous levels, with some having millions and even billions of dollars and others without the barest of necessities. It is for the safety of all that nations and the world’s wealth be more equitably distributed. People who are harshly poor can be tempted to join groups and commit acts that endanger others. Self-interested economic altruism protects us all, including our children and grandchildren. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, whose innovative and fair economic policies helped get us out of the Great Depression, said on Oct 5, 1937, “The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much. It is whether we provide enough for those who have too little.” So be it, nationally and globally. Timothy Hume Behrendt Cold Brook, N.Y.
