MOHAWK – Freshman Christie Traglia had 24
points, seven rebounds and five steals to lead Mohawk over Mount
Markham, 54-50, last Thursday, in a Center State Conference crossover
girls basketball game at Mohawk High School. It was a close
game the entire night, but the Mustangs could never get over the hump,
as their only lead came after the opening basket. “It really
comes down to defense,” said Mount Markham head coach Dawn Yerkie.
“When we were supposed to play certain kinds of defense, we just didn’t
step up and do what we were supposed to.” The Mustangs also had trouble penetrating the lane against the Mohicans, who improved to 9-6. “On offense, we could’ve made it work and moved the ball around, but we just didn’t do it tonight,” Yerkie said. Mount Markham’s Regina Locorini led all scorers with 29 points. “Reggie
(Locorini), she penetrates, she’s a good shooter,” said Mohawk head
coach Melanie Ptak. “We didn’t play her real tough the last time we
played them. So the kids got out on her and actually challenged her a
little bit this game, and I think it made a little bit of a difference.” The
Mustangs got as close as one point when Locorini hit two free throws
with 5:19 remaining. But then the Mohicans went on a 10-2 run where
Traglia scored seven of those points. Ptak said Traglia was slumping before that game. “She’s
been struggling a little bit the last couple of games,” Ptak said.
“She’s just been putting a little bit of pressure on herself. She just
really needed to go out and relax and let the game come to her.” Junior center Brittney Harvey had 13 points for Mohawk. “She’s
starting to come around,” Ptak said. “Probably the last two or three
games, she started to come into her own as far as, when she gets the
ball she’s doing something with it now. When she gets the ball, she’s
not throwing it out to the guards. She’s actually looking for her shot
and it’s making a big difference in her play.” Katie Monohan had 10 points for the Mohicans, and Paige Treen had 11 for Mount Markham, who dropped to 4-9. Yerkie felt the Mustangs lacked intensity. “It’s
a week off from school; kids aren’t in school this week and to come
into a game, it’s like, ‘oh we’ve gotta play basketball,’” Yerkie said.
“I don’t think we were ready to play tonight.” Mount Markham plays at Sherburne-Earlville, Thursday, at 7:30 p.m.
