CHERRY VALLEY – Morgan Shuster scored with six minutes left to give Cherry Valley-Springfield the 2-1 victory over Morris, last Friday, in a Tri-Valley League girls soccer game at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School, the season opener for both teams. Shuster converted a throughball from Savannah Crowley for the winning goal. Kayla Forgit gave Morris the lead 14:38 into the first half with an unassisted goal off a corner kick, but the Patriots’ Fiona Doherty tied it almost six minutes later on a shot from 10 yards out on a pass from Courtney VanBrink. “We’re a team that’s just starting to come together,” said Patriots head coach Amy Garretson. “I think it’s gonna take us a while to get our groove and to figure out who’s gonna go where and who’s gonna play where. I’ve had some of these girls, but I haven’t had all of them. It’s just a matter of just mixing everybody and figuring out how we’re gonna do this.” Garretson is a first-year varsity soccer coach, but has coached modified and JV and is in her ninth year. CV-S outshot the Mustangs 31-14 and dominated the second half, posting 19 shots to Morris’ six. Goalkeeper Lindsay Cairo had 12 saves for the Patriots, while Molly Goodwin had 23 for the Mustangs. The Patriots host their annual tournament this Friday and Saturday.
