NEWPORT – West Canada Valley avenged a loss earlier in the season by beating Richfield Springs, 12-1, Monday, in a Center State Conference Division III (CSC III) baseball game at West Canada Valley Central School. “I don’t know what’s going on with these guys,” Indians head coach Chuck McMann said. “We have a great win on Saturday against an undefeated team and a state ranked team, and then (Monday) we walk on the field like, ‘Richfield’s here, everybody lay down.’ They put forth no effort whatsoever against West Canada.” Dan DeKalb threw a three-hitter, striking out eight and walking one. DeKalb also had three hits, scored three runs and had two RBIs. Brent Fulmer and Rick Koster doubled for West Canada, who improved to 9-6 overall and 3-4 in the division. DeKalb had a no-hitter going until Chad Stone singled for Richfield in the fifth inning. Richfield fell to 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the CSC III. Earlier in the week, Richfield Springs handed state ranked No. 9 Cherry Valley-Springfield its first loss in a 3-1 victory, Saturday, in a non-league game at Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School. Alex Sovocool scattered six hits to get the win in his first varsity start on the mound. Nick Sovocool doubled, and the Indians took advantage of six errors committed by the Patriots, who fell to 7-1. All three of Richfield’s runs were unearned. “When they lost Friday night against Hamilton, they had tears in their eyes,” McMann said. “They came back on Saturday and were focused. We played hard, we played together and we were vocal.” Anthony Brant and Adam Haley each had a double for CV-S, and Steve Herringshaw fanned nine batters in four innings. Last Friday, Richfield Springs lost to Hamilton, 6-5, in nine innings in a CSC III game at Hamilton Central School. Nick Sorosky singled in Tyler White to win the game for the Emerald Knights, who improved to 3-6 overall and 2-3 in the division. Kyle Mason had a triple, and Matt Martin doubled and picked up the win on the mound. Dan Bloomfield, Dave Southard and Stone each had a double for the Indians. Last Wednesday, Colin Greer pitched a one-hitter, as Richfield Springs trounced Morrisville-Eaton, 19-1, in a CSC III game at Richfield Springs Central School. Southard homered to lead off the third inning and the floodgates opened, as the Indians went on to score eight runs in that inning, breaking the game wide open. Southard took a 1-0 fastball well beyond the left field fence to give Richfield a 3-1 lead. Stone laid down a nice bunt on a suicide squeeze play during the rally when Richfield sent 13 batters to the plate. “He’s an excellent bunter,” Indians head coach Chuck McMann said. Alex Sovocool had three hits and drove in four runs, and Stone and Jake Sawicki each had three hits. “We fielded the ball well, and of course it helps when you score 19 runs,” McMann said. “Hopefully it will go a long way for our confidence. We have 17 errors so far this season. The year we won the league, we had nine all season.” Richfield Springs hosts Oriskany, Wednesday, and plays at Westmoreland, Friday. Both games are at 4:30.
