Walks doom Lady Patriots
JOHNSTOWN — With starting pitcher Audy Butler lobbing the ball over
the plate and a defense consistently making the play behind her, Cherry
Valley-Springfield hung with Section II’s Class B Johnstown Lady Bills
for most of the first five innings.
One error, two pitchers, and five walks later, host Johnstown had
suddenly turned a close, fast-paced game into a seven-run lead en route
to an 8-4 victory last Saturday in a first-round matchup at the Ice
Breaker Softball Tournament.
After Butler had begun to labor on the mound for CV-S late in the
bottom of fifth, Patriots’ head coach Tom Brigham sent Theresa Smith to
the hill to begin the home half of the sixth inning. When Smith
proceeded to walk the first three batters she faced, Brigham
immediately replaced Smith with starting shortstop Marcia Searles.
Following an impressive strikeout of Bills’ hitter Fahren Vandrusen,
Searles then allowed consecutive singles and back-to-back walks, as
four runners crossed home plate for what proved to be an insurmountable
8-1 advantage.
Cherry Valley then came back with three runs of its own to no avail
in the top of the seventh, receiving singles from Butler and Michelle
Natali, and an RBI groundout from Renee Darling.
“The first few innings they did well, but then we got into a little
trouble,” said Coach Brigham of his improving Lady Pats. “But at least
we didn’t give up; they hit the ball and got some runs at the end.”
The loss dropped CV-S to 1-4 overall on the season and into the consolation game of the Johnstown High School Tournament.
