WEST WINFIELD – Mount Markham clinched at least a share of the Center State Conference Division II (CSC II) title with a 58-50 victory over Cooperstown, Saturday, in a CSC II girls basketball game at Mount Markham High School. The Redskins went 2-15 from the free throw line, and the Mustangs outscored Cooperstown, 38-21, in the second half. Losses by Cooperstown and Canastota, Monday, means Mount Markham does not have to share the division title. Junior point guard Regina Locorini had 23 points, eight assists and four steals to lead Mount Markham, who improved to 12-8 overall and 7-3 in the division. Brandy Werczynski had 12 points and 11 rebounds and Courtney Roberts had 12 points. Samantha Fox and Jennifer Wehner scored 16 points apiece to lead Cooperstown, who fell to 6-3 in the CSC II. Earlier in the week, Mount Markham’s big three had big games as the Mustangs beat Sherburne-Earlville, 66-61, last Wednesday, in a CSC II basketball game at Mount Markham High School. Locorini recorded her third triple-double and Werczynski and Roberts had double-doubles. Locorini had 16 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists, Werczynski had 22 points and 24 boards and Roberts had 16 points and 14 rebounds. Erin Dowdall led the Marauders with 16 points, as Sherburne-Earlville fell to 14-5 overall and 5-4 in the CSC II. Adrienne Cross had 14 points and Karli Harris added 12. Mount Markham was seeded fifth by the Section III girls basketball committee, Tuesday, in the Class B-2 bracket and will play at fourth seeded Bishop Ludden (12-8) on a date to be determined.
