Neither team could put the ball in the back of the net. After 100 minutes of play the score was Mount Markham 0, Bronxville, 0, Saturday, during the Mount Markham tournament. Neither team could score. Neither team could get a ball past Mustangs goalie Courtney Roberts and Bronxville keeper Lauryn Torch – until the penalty kicks came. During the first set of five penalty kicks, each team scored three times. Then sudden death came. Emma Goff found the back of the net for Bronxville on a sudden death penalty kick, and Mount Markham was unable to respond, giving Bronxville the victory. The game is officially recorded as a tie and only went to penalty kicks because a winner needed to be decided for the tournament. The Mustangs finished the game with a 0-2-1 record. Roberts faced 15 shots and had 15 saves and was named the tournament’s defensive MVP. Torch faced 10 shots and had 10 saves. The Lady Mustangs lost to Herkimer, 6-2, in the first round of the tournament, last Thursday, at Mount Markham High School. Brooke Nasypany had a hat trick, and Kayleigh Gifford had a goal and two assists to lead the Magicians. Kelcie Ganoe and BreLynn Nasypany added a goal apiece for Herkimer, and Sarah Johnson had two assists. Tracey Lynk scored both goals for Mount Markham on assists from Melissa Haggerty and Trisha McNamara. Roberts had 13 saves for the Mustangs, while Abbie Sutliff had 12 saves for Herkimer. Earlier in the week, Mount Markham dropped its season opener, 4-1, last Tuesday, against the Golden Bombers at Ilion Remington Elementary School. Ilion got off to a fast start, scoring three goals in a 10 minute span and giving the Bombers a 3-0 lead with 23:59 left in the first half. “We got on them early,” said Ilion head coach Dan Huntley. “They (Mount Markham) dug a hole and it was hard to come back. “We had a little trouble finishing at times and hit the post a couple of times, but I’m pleased. “We did some really good things today.” Lisa Baron had a goal and an assist to lead Ilion’s attack. Samantha Smith got Ilion on the board 7:03 into the game when her shot from the right skipped through Roberts’ hands and trickled through her legs. Chelsey Russell was credited with the assist. Just over four minutes later, Stephanie Lachacz scored from 10 yards out on an assist from Amy Joy. Almost six minutes later, Baron scored on a one-on-one with Roberts, who came out to challenge the shot. Baron put the ball in the left corner of the net, from 15 yards out, on an assist from Stephanie Belmont. Morgan Trevor added a goal for Ilion with six minutes left in the game on an assist from Baron. Katelynn Phalen scored the lone goal for the Mustangs on a header from five yards out with 15:48 left in the first half. McNamara assisted on the score. Roberts had 22 saves, while Bombers keeper Jackie Reese had nine.
