Herringshaw follows with 16-K performance
CHERRY VALLEY — Cherry Valley-Springfield improved to 4-0 in the
Tri-Valley League with home victories last week against Milford and
Worcester behind dominating pitching performances from its top two
starters.
In a 10-0 defeat of visiting Milford last Wednesday, senior
right-hander Hyde Clarke pitched a no-hitter and tied the school record
with 18 strikeouts, and also starred at the plate by going 4-for-4 with
three runs scored.
Sophomore first baseman Anthony Brant was 2-for-3 with two home runs
and five RBIs for the Patriots (4-0, 4-2), who rebounded from the
previous week’s disheartening non-league loss at St. Johnsville.
Milford managed to put the ball into play just four times off of the
hard-throwing Clarke, and its only base runners of the game were the
result of an error and a hit batsman.
Two days later in another league game against visiting Worcester
last Friday, it was Steven Herringshaw’s turn to shine on the mound —
and freshman teammate Spencer Staley’s turn to shine at the plate — as
CV-S prevailed by a final score of 4-3 in eight innings.
Herringshaw, a junior right-hander, struck out 16 batters in seven
full innings of duty without allowing an earned run for the Pats, and
after Clarke sent the game to extra innings with an RBI single in the
bottom of the seventh, Staley won it with an RBI single past the first
baseman in the bottom of the eighth.
Winning pitcher Ben Halay, who started the eighth inning in relief
of Herringshaw, went 2-for-2 at the plate with an RBI, Clarke finished
2-for-3 with an RBI, while Brant was 2-for-4.
“The pitchers have been doing great,” said Cherry Valley-Springfield
manager Ed Dubben. “We played really well in the Milford game, but kind
of sleepwalked through the first six innings of the Worcester game. We
have to start coming alive in the beginning of games, because some of
our games shouldn’t even be close. We seem to be playing down to our
competition, and we have to snap out of that. We still have lots of
improving to do...”

Indians find their stroke at the plate
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Richfield Springs improved its overall record to
3-3-1 on the season with two impressive victories last week against
Oriskany and Poland, before an 8-2 setback at home on Friday vs.
Westmoreland halted a three-game win streak for the Indians.
In a 13-3 dismantlement on the road of defending Center State
Conference Division III champion Oriskany last Wednesday, Dan
Bloomfield doubled and homered to finish with three RBIs and two runs,
Dan Greer went 3-for-3 with two triples, four RBIs and two runs, while
winning pitcher Dave Southard helped his own cause with a 3-for-4
performance at the plate with three singles, an RBI and two runs scored.
Southard, a junior right-hander, went the distance on the mound for
the Indians (1-1, 3-3-1), allowing three runs — one earned — on just
four hits. He walked just one batter and struck out nine.
Kyle Richards and Luke Soposki contributed two hits apiece in the victory, while Ryan Wratten had two stolen bases and two RBIs.
One day later in an equally impressive 15-4 throttling of Poland,
Wratten went 4-for-5 with four singles, three runs scored, two RBIs and
three of Richfield’s 10 stolen bases as the Indians avenged an
earlier-season loss to the non-league Tornadoes.
Richards, Southard, Soposki and Nick Sovocool all added three hits
for the Indians, with Sovocool collecting a triple, three RBIs and two
stolen bases.
Dan Greer started and got the win on the mound, allowing just one
earned run on four hits in four innings. The senior right-hander walked
one batter and struck out two before being relieved by senior Teddy
Dziadik in the fifth. Dziadik tossed the final three innings for the
Indians, allowing two runs on five hits while walking nobody and
striking out three.
In a 8-2 loss at home to Westmoreland to conclude the week last
Friday, winning pitcher Dan Barns hit a three-run homer and finished
3-for-4 with four RBIs to power the Bulldogs to a CSC Division III win.
Richards took the loss on the hill for the Indians, who have four
league games scheduled this week against Hamilton (Monday),
Morrisville-Eaton (Wednesday) and West Canada Valley (Thursday and
Friday), as well as at least one game on Saturday in the rescheduled
Fort Plain Tournament.

Mustangs begin 1-2 in CSC Division II play
WEST WINFIELD — Mount Markham’s baseball team began its Center State
Conference Division II schedule last week with a victory at home
against Cooperstown, but then lost its next two league games to
Sauquoit Valley and on the road at Sherburne-Earlville.
In a 3-2 win over the visiting Redskins last Wednesday, sophomore
standout Justin Deming went the distance on the mound for the victory,
giving up just two runs on two hits over all seven innings while
striking out nine.
Senior Kevin Lynk and catcher Joe Orsino both doubled for the
Mustangs, while teammates Jimmy Miller, Kyle Maxson and Todd Chafee all
singled in the win.
One day later in a 5-4 setback against Sauquoit Valley in which the
visiting Indians scored once in the sixth and twice more in the top of
the seventh, Lynk tripled at the plate but took the loss on the mound,
surrendering five runs on eight hits over all seven innings with four
strikeouts.
Maxson singled, doubled and had three RBIs in the loss, while Deming and Nolan Leuthauser each contributed two singles.
And in a 10-4 loss at rival Sherburne-Earlville last Friday, Nolan
Fuller had three hits and Sam McLane added three RBIs to lead the host
Marauders past the Mustangs and right-handed starter Steve Casale, who
took the loss on the hill for the Mustangs.
Mount Markham, which is now 1-2 in the league and 2-5 overall, will
look to improve on its record in the CSC Division II with three more
league games this week against Canastota (Monday), Waterville
(Wednesday) and at Sauquoit Valley (Friday).
