Mt. Markham falls in Class B Quarterfinals; Richfield Springs, ODY drop Class D first-round matches
WEST WINFIELD — After yet another highly successful regular season
in which the Mount Markham girls volleyball team captured its third
Center State Conference Division II championship in the past four
seasons, the 2005-06 winter sports season officially came to an end for
the Lady Mustangs with a 23-25, 18-25, 25-12, 22-25, three-games-to-one
loss to visiting Lowville in a Section III Class B quarterfinal-round
match last Friday.
Junior setter Kaitlin Farruggia tallied three kills, 17 assists and
four digs in defeat for Mount Markham, freshman sister Jeana Farruggia
added 12 kills, five blocks and six digs, sophomore middle hitter
Aundrea Dorie collected seven kills and one block, while junior
co-captain Melissa Haggerty recorded nine kills and 15 digs.
The season-ending loss came two nights after the Mustangs advanced
to the quarterfinals with a come-from-behind, 3-2 defeat of visiting
Altmar-Parish-Williamstown in an opening-round match last Wednesday.
In that five-game victory, Jeana Farruggia had 14 kills, four blocks
and nine digs for the Mustangs, sister Kaitlin Farruggia recorded three
kills, 19 assists and one dig, junior Katelynn Phalen added two kills,

III Class B volleyball playoffs after many successful Class C runs,
concluded the season with an outstanding overall record of 18-5, a feat
made even more impressive when considering the team began the campaign
an uncharacteristic 0-2. The Mustangs finished with a 9-1 record
against CSC Division II schools, with the lone five-game league loss
against Sauquoit Valley being avenged in the second and final meeting
of the season.
