VAN HORNSVILLE — Last season it was Cherry Valley-Springfield who
took home the annual Holiday Tournament hardware with a defeat of
neighboring rival Richfield Springs.
This season, the Indians took it back.
In the latest boys basketball chapter between CV-S, Richfield,
Sharon Springs and this year’s tournament hosts, Owen D. Young, Most
Valuable Player Marc Barraco’s game-high 18 points helped lead
Richfield Springs past Cherry Valley 59-53 in the championship game of
the Owen D. Young Holiday Tournament last Wednesday.
All-tournament team member and starting point guard Larry Bond
chipped in with 11 points for the Indians, who led by one point after
the first quarter, by seven at the half and nine after three.
Senior forward Kevin Cooper added 10 points and Josh Lupardo nine as
Richfield Springs won back-to-back games for the second time this
season and also climbed back to the .500 mark at 4-4 overall.
Senior center Scott Flint scored a team-high 16 points in defeat for
the Patriots, who were looking to make it back-to-back wins themselves
after picking up their first victory of the season with a 45-42
first-round besting of Sharon Springs one night earlier.
Sophomore guard Jason Guernsey and senior forward Jesse Lusk each
scored 11 points apiece in the title-game defeat, while guard Hyde
Clark had nine.
In Richfield’s 47-37 first-round victory over the host Wildcats,
Barraco tallied a game-high 17 for the Indians, who took a 22-5 lead
into the half before being outscored 16-8 in the third.
Bond added eight points for the victors, Lupardo and senior forward Kyle Richards scored six, while Cooper had five.
In the first-round defeat for Owen D. Young (0-10), junior Josh Hess
