Richfield’s Lynch places second, Dziadik and Seamon take third
RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Immaculate Heart Central tallied 145 team points
and had four first-place finishers to conclude on top of the 19th
Annual Jeffrey L. Calkins Memorial Wrestling Tournament this past
Saturday.
Host school Richfield Springs finished 10th out of 12 teams with 59
total points, and had one second place, two third place and one
third-place finisher.
Senior Indian Mike Lynch made it all the way to the championship
round of the 171-pound bracket, but was pinned in the title match by
Fonda-Fultonville’s Corey Calkins in 4:14. Lynch earlier pinned Russell
Strife of Carthage in 2:31 and Luke Kalamas of IHC in 5:19 to reach the
championship round.
Fellow Richfield Springs wrestlers Teddy Dziadik (145) and Todd
Seamon (189) both placed third in the tournament, while Dan Zurmuhlen
(152) finished fourth.
Dziadik pinned Cooperstown’s Sara Ruggerio in 1:27 in his first
match of the day, lost a 13-9 decision to Derick Anderson of Carthage
in his second match and then pinned Dolgeville’s Steve Benson in 2:03
before securing a third-place finish with an 8-0 majority decision over
Unadilla Valley’s Josh Sandell.
Seamon likewise pinned his first opponent of the day (Herkimer’s
Mitch Soules in 1:42) before being pinned himself in the semifinals by
eventual champion Hank Penree in 3:44. Seamon rebounded in the loser’s
bracket with a 1:54 pin of Fonda-Fultonville’s James Maher and a 7-5
decision over Dan Hahn.
Zurmuhlen, meanwhile, was pinned in his opening match vs. Walton’s
Cody Reed in 1:12, and then again in the third-place match by Floyd
LaVancha of Carthage in :50. In between, Zurmuhlen pinned Dolgeville’s
Blake Barton in 3:10 and Cooperstown’s Robert Bussie in 3:37.
Earlier in the week in a three-way match at Little Falls, Richfield
Springs defeated both Frankfort-Schuyler by a 47-18 count and the host
Mounties by a 30-24 margin.
Dziadik recorded an 18-3 technical fall in the match vs. the
Frankfort, while Lynch pinned his opponent in 3:27. Highlighting the
win against Little Falls, Lynch pinned his challenger in just 45
seconds.
