COOPERSTOWN – Bassett Healthcare has been awarded a grant of $75,000 to develop a Perinatal Quality Review System that will serve as the statewide model for New York. The end result of this program will help hospitals standardize processes and systems in order to improve the quality of perinatal care. Bassett’s director of Perinatal and Pediatric Nursing, Jean Cramer, RNC, BS, notes that quality improvement in perinatal health is an ongoing process requiring the cooperation of all disciplines involved in the care and treatment of women and infants in the perinatal period (those months leading up to and immediately following the birth of a child). “At this time, there is no well-developed, universally accepted process for reviewing, analyzing and interpreting data gathered through the Regional Perinatal Center (RPC) and the Statewide Perinatal Data System (SPDS),” said Cramer. “Nor is there a standardized mechanism in place whereby birthing hospitals in New York State coordinate data review and resulting practice changes with their RPC or other birthing hospitals in their region. So Bassett is excited to have the opportunity, through this grant, to develop a statewide system for reviewing clinical outcomes via the Statewide Perinatal Data System and analyzing that data to make improvements in perinatal care,” Cramer added.
