Students at Richfield Springs Central School were treated to assemblies Friday morning, April 4. The theme of each assembly was to make wise decisions that will turn the students into “school heroes” rather than “school zeroes.” The Power Team that presented the assemblies consisted of fit, muscular men with the powerful message that wise decisions regarding smoking, alcohol and chemical dependency are important. They encouraged the students rise to the challenges to avoid bad choices. The Power Team delighted the students with its ability to rip 4-inch phone books in half, bend rods of steel and smash cement blocks. In one demonstration, a Power Team member walked with fourth grader Christopher Molloy, piggy-back style, explaining that the student represented a small but incorrect decision on the part of the presenter. Shortly afterward, he had eighth grader Sawyer Pooler trade places with Molloy showing how “his problem had gotten bigger and it was more difficult for him to move through life.” Soon, it became time for fifth grade teacher Chuck McMann to receive a piggy-back ride which represented that one bad choice can lead to another and one can get weighted down with problems that result from poor decisions made in previous years. Students returned to classes abuzz concerning the brute strength of the Power Team, but also having been served with some sound advice. Bruce Watson is a resident of Richfield Springs.
