Karate Kids
Karate instructor and RSCS adult education teacher Tina Powell recently visited elementary physical education classes and introduced the students to basic fundamentals of karate and self defense. Third graders Leah McCaskey, Amanda Utter and Taylor Hallberg are shown as Powell demonstrates proper stance. The visit was part of National Breakfast in Our Schools Week, and the students also learned the importance of nutrition and exercise from Powell. Karate is just one form of exercise available to the students and adults in the community.

Curling up with a good book
Victoria Young and her mom, Faith, recently curled up with a good book as part of the Richfield Springs Central School’s PTO’s evening of Bedtime and Books in the elementary gymnasium. Students and parents brought pillows, quilts, and blankets to school and read to each other for an hour before a nighttime snack of milk and cookies was served. The event was part of the Parents As Reading Partners program that continues at RSCS.

On the mend
Due to a sledding accident in the middle of February, first grader Zane Farley has been out of school with a broken hip. Last week, he surprised his class with a visit and let his classmates know he is okay and driving his wheelchair like a Nascar driver. His mom, Amy Farley, reported that Zane is “itching” to get back to school, and, judging by the reaction of his friends, they are anxious to have him return. The sledding accident left his sister, Bailey, with a broken arm, and their parents very thankful that their kids are both nicely on the mend. Zane shared snack time and story time with his class and is pictured in the background with his concerned and faithful friends.

That’s a spicy ‘meataball’
Richfield Springs Central School retirees rolled up their sleeves to help with the recent benefit for ALS in honor of fellow retiree, Ellen Beirne. John Bussone and Gary Parese were in charge of the meatballs for the spaghetti dinner and are shown in the cafeteria preparing them prior to the benefit volleyball match, Friday, March 9. The dinner was a chance for staff and students to connect with former staff members Dave and Linda Ehlers, Kathy and Andy Lakata, Judy Guzik, Barbara Horwald, Carolee Guilbault, Larry Schoff, Terry Crandall, Sharon Tavern, Pam Andela, Ike Cole and Kathy Sweeney. A good meal and time was had by all.

Hangin’ around
Fourth grader Kaity Richvalsky recently demonstrated the inverted hang in gym class with Jacob Matteson and physical education teacher Karen Watson as her spotters.
