Once again, it has been an active summer for the American Legion Post 616. First of all, any members who need to renew their dues, please do so. As always, new members are welcome to join. This includes Legion, Auxiliary, Sons of the American Legion and AmVets. Anyone who would like to submit names and addresses for service personnel, either stateside or abroad, are asked to do so by contacting the post personally or calling 315-858-9924 during operation hours of 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday, or 12-6 p.m., Sunday. Photos for our Wall of Honor are always welcome. The color guard has been extremely busy. They have been in several parades, bringing home trophies to display as a token of all their hard work. One recent event they participated in was a ceremony at the Utica Post Office honoring the Gold Star mothers. Thirteen of the honor guard participated, showing another patriotic sign of brotherhood amongst this group. We are proud of the way these guys represent us in this community as well as surrounding areas. Regular meetings are continuing every second Monday of the month for the Legion and Auxiliary, second Monday for SAL, and first Tuesday for AmVets. To be well informed, we need participation of all membership, so please urge fellow members to attend. The Auxiliary will host its craft show, Nov. 24, at the legion. Contact Judy Pooler, 315-858-9339, for further information if needed. There will be a GI party held at the post, Oct. 21, at 9 a.m. All available bodies are needed. The AmVets have been holding a raffle for a compound bow purchased at Gander Mountain. The winner was drawn at the Oct. 2 meeting. The winner is Robert Sexton, of Floyd. Thanks to Leo Mackin, fundraiser chairman, and those members who sold tickets. All of their hard work made this fundraiser successful. Tex Seamon, our county representative, tells us that New York State has passed a property tax exemption law, amending the existing law, to include all Cold War vets. For more information about this, please call him, 315-858-1251. Rose Stringer is now recuperating in Vermont at her son’s residence after a fall. Bob Woodrow is home finally from the Syracuse VA hospital, recovering from surgery and an extended stay. Get well wishes go out to you from all of your post family. Willie Senko is still a resident at Folts Home. We miss you and send our regards and well wishes to all. Anyone wanting to visit veterans at local hospitals or nursing homes, please feel free to do so. Often, when a member is not seen in the post, they get forgotten. It only takes a little time from someone, but can make a big difference in recovery and attitude. Also, please contact the post with any information if anyone knows of someone who should be put on our sick call board. On Sept. 10, our legion member, John Glynn, went to be with the “Great Commander.” He is missed dearly. Goodbye, our friend, comrade and fellow legionnaire. Until next time...
