CHERRY VALLEY – Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School elementary students celebrated the end of the year with a program, Thursday, June 21, for the parents and community in the school gymnasium. The theme of the program this year was It’s A Grand Old Flag, and each class donned red, white and blue visors, necklaces, hats or pinwheels. Each class was introduced as they marched into the gym behind the school’s own “Uncle Sam,” physical education teacher Randy Beadle. Rebecca Carter, a sixth grade teacher at CV-S, served as the mistress of ceremonies. An honor guard from the Whiteman-Hull-Snyder American Legion Post 1360 of Cherry Valley presented the colors. The Pledge of Allegiance was led by Emily Schafsteck and Shawn Lowry. A welcome by CV-S Superintendent Nicholas Savin was followed by a musical selection, “The Kindergarten Wall,” performed by the elementary students under the direction of Liza DiSavino. The sixth grade students and safety patrol members were then recognized. The sixth grade ensemble performed “Ode to Louie” followed by the elementary band’s rendition of “Penguin Promenade,” under the direction of Michelle Schmitt. Carter presented flowers to Ron Shaw and Sharon Yerdon in honor of their retirement, following many years of service to the students of CV-S. The program concluded with a thank you from Elementary Principal Grace Coddington. Students then returned to their classrooms to say goodbye to their classmates and teachers.
