Jazz band to play at hotel

COOPERSTOWN – The David Demsey and Friends Jazz Quartet will play, Saturday, at the Otesaga Hotel at, 7:30 p.m., as part of the Cooperstown Concert Series. David Demsey does it all. He is professor of Jazz Studies at William Paterson University, performer, composer, scholar, author, and award-winning educator. The only person to hold graduate degrees in saxophone from both The Eastman School of Music and the Juilliard School, Demsey performs frequently with the New York Philharmonic, with whom he has done two world tours. He has also appeared with the Metropolitan Opera, the Kirov Orchestra, and is a member of the American Saxophone Quartet. Demsey is the author of books on John Coltrane and Alec Wilder. Joining Demsey will be pianist Jim McNeely, bassist Marcus McLaurine, and drummer Rich DeRosa. McNeely is a renowned composer, arranger, conductor, educator, musical director and composer-in-residence of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, as well as the Danish Radio Orchestra. McNeely has 10 albums in his name and has received nine Grammy Award nominations. He has played in the groups of Ted Curson, Chet Baker, Thad Jones and Mel Lewis, Stan Getz and Phil Woods. McLaurine, bassist, composer, leader and sideman, has become one of the most sought-after artists in jazz, sharing bandstands with Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Burrell, James Moody, Lou Donaldson, Dame Cleo Laine, Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Abbey Lincoln, and the Count Basie Orchestra under the direction of Thad Jones. DeRosa has toured with Peter Nero, Marian McPartland, Gerry Mulligan, Jackie Craine and many others. He also recorded with Gerry Mulligan, Bob Brookmeyer, Jackie and Roy, Susannah McCorkle and Chuck Wayne. He is the arranger for jazz at Lincoln Center.
