COOPERSTOWN – The Otsego Dance Society is holding its next contradance, Friday, March 2, at 8 p.m., at the Presbyterian Church on the corner of Pioneer and Church streets in Cooperstown. The band for the evening is Illegal Contraband, with Nancy Spero calling. Admission is $7 for adults, $2 for teenagers and students, and free for children 12 and under. For more information, call 315-735-0846 or 607-965-8232. Spero is from Ithaca. Her high-energy contradances and square dances are well known all over the Northeast. With her 17 years of calling experience, Spero is able to easily guide beginners, while keeping experienced dancers literally on their toes. Illegal Contraband has a repertoire unlike any other contradance band. The musicians, AJ Bodnar and Liza DiSavino, are known for playing Irish and Old New England tunes, Swedish waltzes and wild klezmer music. They play multiple instruments, taking the traditional keyboard, bass, guitar and fiddle to a new level by adding accordion, bodhran, pennywhistle, cornet and French horn. Contradancing is a traditional New England dance form that is social and easy to learn. Singles and beginners are welcome, as no dance experience or partner is necessary. Although all dances are taught, beginners are encouraged to come early for more basic instruction. Dancing will begin at 8 p.m. and go until 11:30.
