Hour long getaway in West Winfield salon
By Janine Giordano |

WEST WINFIELD – They may call their West Winfield shop a salon, but the staff and owners of Suzanne Christine Salon at 374 W. Main St. in West Winfield should be classified as travel agents.

Give them an hour or so and they will pamper you and provide you with a getaway that is sure enough to recharge anyone’s batteries.
And they’ll have you home in time for your next meal.
Just stepping into the salon tells you it’s more than just hair cuts and manicures.
“I like to help people relax,” said Suzanne Niederlander, owner of the shop. “And sometimes this is the only time they get to relax.”
She and her daughter, Christina, opened the mom and daughter shop in January and have since then been adding services for their clientele.
In addition to offering yoga classes on Monday, from 9:30-10:45 a.m. with Kristy Caruso, Niederlander has recently brought on board a licensed esthetician.
Skin Care Services by Kathy Smith is the name of the shop within the salon geared toward making people look better and feel better about themselves. Smith specializes in pampering her customers with facials, waxing services, hand treatments and back treatments Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Recently, Smith’s sister, Linda Butler, stopped down for some much needed pampering and in return received a full facial from her sister.
“Anyone can get a facial, any age, man or woman,” Smith said. “It’s good for young people. It keeps acne and rosacea under control. It’s anti-aging and helps to control outbreaks and nourishes the skin as well,” she added as she exfoliated her sister’s cheeks.
“We use Manuka honey, which is found in New Zealand,” Smith said, describing her line of products. While many of her clients get facials just for relaxation, Smith said facials are used to heal many skin problems.
The process can take anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour, depending on what the clients’ needs are at the time. “There’s many steps. We usually begin with cleansing, then we tone and massage. There’s extraction and then everyone is treated to a mask and moisturizing. It’s all customized to their skin type,” she said.
In addition to using Manuka honey, Smith said customers will also be treated with the Plantogen line of plant based spa products, used with facial, hand, body and foot care.
Prior to attending Aesthetic Science Institute, in Latham, Smith said she was a social worker.
“I enjoyed helping people then and I enjoy making them feel good now,” said Smith. “I got tired of the red tape and paperwork.”
So she said simply that she attended classes, “and took my boards and got my license.”
Then she added, “this is relaxing for both me and my client.”
A mother of two and grandmother to four, Smith said she chose West Winfield as her location because she grew up in the area, in Starkville, and has stayed locally all her life.
Another important reason she chose West Winfield is that “there are not a lot of services like this in the area.”
Smith said she likes the “small town feeling. Even though we are country people we still like to feel and look good. So why should they have to go all the way to Utica to feel good? Let them come here instead.”
A pampering staff and short respite from reality may not be all you will find at the salon. Take it from Todd Niederlander, who six years ago went in for a haircut.
“His mother sent him in for a hair cut,” Suzanne Niederlander spoke about how she met her husband, chuckling before she continued. “I’ve been cutting his hair ever since.”
