Local man makes time for landscaping
by Dustin Atty |
Chris Mayer works the security detail on the graveyard shift at the
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. “It’s a good job, but it’s not
what I wanna be doing,” said Mayer. His real love is landscaping.
Mayer, 25, is the founder, owner and operator of Leatherstocking
Landscaping and Contracting, of Richfield Springs. Founded only one
year ago, Leatherstocking has done jobs in Richfield Springs,
Cooperstown and all across the Mohawk Valley. “We’re getting busier and
busier,” said Mayer.
Leatherstocking Landscaping and Contracting offers its customers an
array of lawn services, from mowing, to stone walkways, and tree
trimming, something Mayer joked of doing last week in Cooperstown after
a thunderstorm ripped trees down throughout the town.
A 1997 graduate of Richfield Springs Central School, Mayer then went
on to study criminal justice at Herkimer County Community College.
Since then, he has been working the night shift, full time, at the
Baseball Hall of Fame. However, Mayer has been doing landscaping for
almost his whole life. “It is something I have been doing since I was
yea high,” he said. “It’s a great line of work, very self satisfying;
you can do a job and look back on it.”
Mayer’s current headquarters are at his home, in Richfield Springs.
“I’m running out of room for all my equipment though,” he said. Mayer
provides his own equipment, from lawn mowers, rakes, and landscaping
stone, to trucks used for foliage removal.
“If he says he’s gonna mow and trim, he mows and trims,” said Robert
Woodrow, Richfield Springs resident and Leatherstocking Landscaping and
Contracting customer.
Mayer’s favorite project, and his specialty, are stone walk ways.
“They’re permanent, and really, they’re just beautiful,” he said.
Leatherstocking Landscaping and Contracting is just beginning to
make a name for itself, but Mayer prides himself in detail and
consistency. “He’s a good guy, quick and efficient,” said Woodrow.
“It’s the little things that make the big difference,” said Mayer.
