Don’t forget the less fortunate this Christmas
By Richard Palmer |
Christmas is just around the corner. In spite of the depressed economy, most everyone has or will be out shopping for holiday gifts. The lights are strung outside and it’s about time to trim the tree.
Let’s not forget there are families struggling with finances and concerned about putting food on the table. Thus, the season of giving, particularly this year, has taken on greater importance. It is predicted more families than ever will be turning to such agencies as the Salvation Army, church organizations and food pantries to help them this Christmas.
It is the same scene across the country. Family service organizations are being flooded with a staggering number of requests for help. Local churches have asked congregations to bring in canned goods or be a little more generous when the offering plate comes around.
Americans are, at heart, generous people. But sometimes it takes some prodding to make them realize the true meaning of the season and that no one in need should be ignored.
Without family service organizations, churches and a multitude of other groups, there would be no Christmas for many.
Thousands of people have lost their jobs. But they still must cope with the price of fuel, food, electricity and rent. The number of families pinching pennies is high. Hardest hit are the working poor and those on fixed incomes, who, after paying their bills, have very little left at the end of the month for food. Thus, a Christmas turkey and all the trimmings, let alone presents, is more of a dream than reality.
These are tough economic times for many, and it really hits home when we realize we have relatives and neighbors who are struggling who could use a helping hand.
People who are still gainfully employed should not forget the less fortunate. Help as much as you can. There is an old saying, “There, but by the grace of God, go I.”
