Taxpayers shouldn’t pay more than necessary I was surprised to read in the Mercury that RSCS will be having pre-K in the fall. At the May 3 public hearing (before the budget vote), when asked about the criteria for pre-K, Superintendent Barraco said that if 30 or less registered for kindergarten, he would then consider having pre-K. How many students are registered for kindergarten? I have heard that there are 41, as of today. Accessing the state aid website (stateaid.nysed.gov), it looks like RSCS should be getting $32,472 more in aid for this program. This amount plus fund balance in excess of 2 percent should be “refunded” to us taxpayers. With $1.6 million in a reserve account and a possible fund balance beyond 2 percent, Barraco said that he would take a look at reducing the 4.2 percent tax levy increase in August. Please let our board members know that we support our school and believe in paying our fair share every year, but we should not be paying more than what is necessary. Fran Hazelton Richfield Springs
