May 5 marked a famous Mexican holiday, Cinco de Mayo. This holiday
celebrates the courage of the Mexican people during the battle, La
Batalla de Puebla, on May 5, 1862. During this battle, the Mexican Army
defeated Napoleon’s French forces at Puebla, Mexico.
Students at RSCS joined in this Mexican celebration in many ways
throughout the school. Spanish teacher Melanie Miller initiated the
fiesta within her Spanish classes. She then made contact with Cafeteria
Manager Pam Preston to collaborate and come up with a Mexican buffet to
be served for lunch May 5. “This is the first year that Cinco de Mayo
activities involved K-12 students, and it was a great success,” said
Miller.
During the Mexican buffet, senior Spanish students assisted the
cafeteria staff in serving the elementary students while dressed in
Mexican garb. “It was great to be able to work with Mrs. Miller and her
classes to integrate culinary arts into their Spanish curriculum,” said
Preston. This is something that both Miller and Preston agreed would
become an annual event.
In addition to the buffet, daily trivia contests were held and the
following students were presented with gift certificates for the snack
bar and Taco Bell: Veronica Coletti, Jessica Garner, Ashlee Pierce, Tia
Van Winkler, Eric Greenwood, Ian Sebastian, Derek Heckman, and Ryan
Talma.
Spanish students also had the opportunity to sample various Mexican
dishes and listen to Spanish music within their individual classes.
There are more upcoming events within the school cafeteria,
including Hawaiian Day and numerous giveaways for our 2005 senior
class. This is just another great thing that’s happening at Richfield
Springs Central School.
