Tiffini Martin, an eighth grader at Richfield Springs Central
School, placed fifth in the regional spelling bee held at SUNY Oneonta,
Saturday, March 5. Family members and friends cheered her on as she
spelled her way through the competition. There were 32 students in the
contest.
The original competition began at RSCS when English Teacher Kristie
Armstrong formed a spelling bee for her eighth grade classes. “Each of
the three eighth grade classes had their own spelling bee,” Armstrong
said. “Then the top five from each group stayed after school for the
finals.” Martin out-spelled her opponent, Carson Mead, in the finals by
correctly spelling the word, dubiously.
From the RSCS finals, Armstrong arranged for Martin to participate
in the regional spelling bee at SUNY Oneonta. When asked how she
enjoyed the competition, she replied, “I was so nervous!” However, she
added that she was thankful for the opportunity to experience the
competition.
Martin is the daughter of Patrick and Sandra Martin of Jordanville.
She is also the granddaughter of Robert and Marian Martin of Little
Falls and Francis Toner and the late Phyllis Toner of St. Cloud, FL.
Amy Dyn is a teacher at RSCS.
