The Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) of Richfield Springs Central School (RSCS) hosted Santa Claus in December, who presented every student in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade with a book, according to PTO vice president Laura Twomey. “It was an event that came off, thanks to great support from a lot of people who proved to be Santa’s helpers and helped make it a wonderful event for the RSCS elementary students,” she said. Juice was donated from McDonald’s and napkins were donated from Price Chopper. The RSCS staff and PTO baked and provided the books that Santa passed out. “The RSCS custodial staff deserves a big thank you for the clean up of spills and crumbs that occurred after Santa passed out the books,” according to Twomey. “Two hundred and sixty books were donated and there was incredible support. This event was the PTO’s December event to promote literacy in the district,” added Twomey. “Santa (Mike Twomey) came in from Albany for this special occasion. Our next project is “Pennies for Pages” in January which will raise money and help broaden and support the school’s Accelerated Reader list of titles that RSCS students can take computer tests on after completing the books they read,” she said. Some of the books they read are not “Accelerated Readers” and this project will help expand the list of titles the students can read and test from, Twomey explained. In February, the students of RSCS will be reading to earn inches of duct tape, which will involve building principal Penny Harrington and assistant principal Therijo Climenhaga in a “taping” challenge that is yet to be announced officially by the PTO. “We are always looking for ways to supplement and support what goes on in the classrooms at our school,” offered Twomey.
