The energy crisis – The suggested tax on gasoline is supposedly needed to carry out research for alternative energy sources. Too bad the industries involved in supplying energy didn’t conduct this research themselves and that government didn’t step in and force industry to do so. That they have not done so and that government has not done so is evident from our present crisis situation.

Fire caused when oil overflowed from an old burner at the Shurkatch Fishing Tackle plant on Elm Street Extension caused damage to the boiler and kiln room. The oil ignited and spread the flames to the walls and ceiling of the room, but the plant sprinkler system checked the fire from spreading further. Frederick Doolittle and employees in the main building discovered the fire about 3:30 p.m. and summoned the local fire department. A hose was dropped into Ocquionis Creek to put out the fire. The overflow came from an old burner that was being used while the regular heating system was being cleaned.

Harold Parslow, age 24, of Richfield Springs was found Sunday unconscious in the woods about eight miles north of Dolgeville. He had been hunting in the wooded area of Jerseyfield Lake Road in the Town of Salisbury with three companions Saturday afternoon. Blustery winds and a near blizzard made visibility poor and Parslow became separated from the party. Efforts by his fellow hunters to locate him failed and they then made their way out of the woods to seek aid. Search parties made no progress on Saturday afternoon but upon returning early Sunday morning they found Parslow unconscious in the snow, suffering from frostbite and exposure. Parslow was removed to Little Falls Hospital for treatment. Parslow came to Richfield Springs last spring from Schoharie and opened a shoe repair store on Lake Street.

Nicholas Garbera of Schuyler Lake is the first Otsego County selectee to be drafted into the U.S. Army under the recent call-up. Garbera reported to Local Draft Board 43 at Cooperstown and was sworn into the Army at Utica. For the next eight weeks, Garbera will undergo an intensive course of basic training. Garbera is currently in his first week of training at Camp Pickett, near Blackstone, Virginia. Major General Robert C. Macon, commanding general of the 17th Airborne “Thunder from Heaven” Division based at Camp Pickett says, “The mission of the Army is to become the best in the world. Our Army is operating on a single idea – that a man will become a better soldier if he is treated like a human being.”

Advertisement – Give her the leisure she wants for Christmas! Christmas is the appropriate time to give her the smart new electric range she has always wanted – the range with the time clock, thermostat, insulated oven – a range that cooks with clean, flameless heat. Cooking electrically is more of a pleasure than a task. There’s nothing to burn – no ashes, smoke or soot. Electricity never has to be ordered. The turn of a switch provides all the clean intense heat you want and it compares favorably with any fuel in cost. Your electric company or your dealer will give you an estimate of the cost of electric cooking in your home. New York State Electric & Gas Corp., Richfield Springs – Phone 149.
100 Years Ago – December 1908 A speech on race problems by President Roosevelt at the laying of the cornerstone of the new $100,000 home for the colored Young Men’s Christian Association in Washington, D.C. made the event a notable one. In his address the President said: “As for the white man, let him remember that to do justice to the colored man is demanded not only by the interest of the colored man, but by the interest of the white man also. Sooner or later, every class of citizens will feel the effect of the raising or the degradation of any other class. I am not speaking of social relations; I am speaking of equality of treatment before the law, of equality of opportunity to earn a living, or equality of opportunity to earn the respect that should be accorded to the man who behaves decently and is a good neighbor and a good citizen.”
