SCHUYLER LAKE – What’s in a name?
At the June meeting of the Exeter Historical Society, members and
friends found out that the answer to that question is one word –
frustration. Frustration when there are no names.
As a result of workdays held by the members to catalogue the
society’s collection, over 75 pictures were found that had no
identification of any type. These were presented to those attending the
meeting in the hopes that someone would recognize a person or place.
There was some success with a few of the pictures, but the most
commonly heard comment was “Why didn’t they write the complete name on
the picture?” Why, indeed?
Those attending were reminded that they should check their own
pictures at home to make sure each is properly labeled with complete
names of people and places so that future generations won’t lose
valuable pictures of those important in their lives just because they
were never labeled. It’s a great loss to the families of the unknown
who might have no other record of their ancestors.
Will you help us try to identify some of these pictures? If you have
any idea of who these people are or the organization shown, we’d
appreciate you sharing your knowledge by calling 858-2575 (leave
message), 858-0679, or 858-1254.
In other business, a letter supporting the efforts to maintain
Crampton’s Gap as a Civil War battle site was sent on behalf of the
historical society.
Members were urged to document the history of their property,
tracking back the previous owners and adding information and pictures
to be kept on permanent file.
The next regular meeting will be held at Polly’s House in Schuyler Lake, July 19, at 7 p.m.
