Richfield coaches Jody Bard and Jesus Martinez along with the Cooperstown coaches wore their pajamas too. (Photo by Bruce Watson) | | In honor and memory of area folks affected by leukemia, Richfield Springs was co-sponsoring, along with Thrivent Insurance Group, a fundraising event which included a spaghetti dinner, silent auction and Community vs. RSCS donkey basketball faculty/staff game to benefit leukemia research. Initiating the pajama incentive were Richfield Springs coaches, Jodi Bard and Jesus Martinez, whose teams not only competed in their PJ’s but donated a “Basket of Summer Fun” as a prize for the RSCS silent auction. Bard noted that by the end of the game there was $100 in earnings between the PJ incentive and extra donations from the Cooperstown/Richfield spectators. Both teams were publicly recognized by the leukemia fundraiser coordinator, Chuck McMann. A fifth grade teacher at RSCS, McMann commended the teams for their spirit of giving back and working together for a great cause. To cap off the Richfield Springs fundraiser, RSCS students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelfth are donating all loose change and competing for the most amount raised per grade level. A total amount raised has yet to be determined but preliminary figures are amazing. Bruce Watson is a freelance writer for The Mercury and currently substitutes for ODY.
