Holiday dinner a school-wide effort at ODY
By Bruce Watson |

VAN HORNESVILLE – For many years, the Owen D. Young Central School community of students and staff have united in their efforts for the annual holiday dinner. Their work has already begun to make this year’s dinner, scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 18, at 1 p.m., the best yet.

The dinner is open to any senior citizen living in the ODY school district and literally involves almost every grade level, student, club and staff member working toward the goal of making the dinner a success.
Sponsored by the student council, the dinner is held in the school’s auditorium, which is transformed to look like a high-end restaurant.
“Those that attend are just thrilled with it,” said high school math teacher Linda Mosher. “It’s a very nice time and the auditorium gets transformed thanks to flower arrangements, artwork and table favors provided by the staff and students.”
The cafeteria staff prepares the meal, which is a far cry from the traditional school lunches they prepare during the week for students. This year, Food Service Manager John Schottel is already at work planning a meal that “breaks from tradition” in what the staff has served in the past.
Entertainment is provided by the vocal and instrumental music departments, and high school piano students are given a chance to perform their talents.
“It’s a festive time,” said student council adviser Megan McCoy. “The student council members serve as waiters and waitresses, placemats get made by students, and the staff of our school really comes through making this a success. Our home and careers students will be making all the Christmas cookies. We all pitch in.”
Students in the elementary learn and serve club are already at work on the table favors. Each attendee will receive a pouch of soup mix that will include assorted dry beans and spices so the seniors can go home and prepare homemade soup, compliments of the club.
“It’s a wonderful time for the students of our school to mingle with senior citizens,” said grade four teacher Sue Jordan. “Senior citizens who might not see each other have a chance to get together and enjoy the dinner and it’s a great opportunity for our school to give back to the community that supports us.”
Fran Dorantes, superintendent administrative assistant, is still taking reservations for the dinner. Dorantes can be reached at 315-858-0729, ext. 0.
The auditorium is handicapped accessible.
