Books for bears in Jordanville
By Janine Giordano |

JORDANVILLE – Teddy Bear Book Bags is the name of the latest project keeping the Jordanville librarian and library supporters busy these days, with grant money and project blueprints paving the way to the Teddy Bear Den, its cub readers and an upcoming program set for a springtime kickoff.

According to Librarian Judy Devries, the teddy bear theme is in honor of President Teddy Roosevelt, who, 100 years ago, dedicated the library at its opening. The Teddy Bear Den is a corner of the library designated for parents and young children, where they can sit and read to one another and not be distracted by goings on in other areas of the library.
A grant from the Libri Foundation, funds raised by Friends of the Library and community members, and an outline and guidance from people supporting the Hooked on Books Project has given Devries another avenue to serve the community and its readers.
The Teddy Bear Book Bag program will be geared toward promoting reading among the youngest members of the library. Devries is still currently working out the details, but tentative plans include the use of approximately 70 books totaling $1,000, which will be selected from a list provided by the Libri Foundation grant.
There will be 20 canvas tote bags holding 10 books each which the children and parents will be encouraged to sign out. Each of the bags will be decorated by community members and will boast the names of businesses or individuals who sponsored the purchase and decoration of the bag.
Included in the bag will be a donor card listing the names of all the community members and businesses that made a donation toward the project.
While the books are coming through the grant, Devries said they are currently looking for community donations to fund the purchase of the plain canvas bags and the art supplies needed to decorate the bags.
Once the bags are purchased, Devries will schedule a decorating event, where children and parents can gather to decorate the bags.
The kickoff for this project is tentatively set for March, Devries said.
“Our goal is to have the children (or parents) read 200 books a year,” Devries said. “They’ll sign out one bag, read the books, return it, then sign out another bag. If they start at age 1, with parents reading to them, by age 6 they will have been (introduced) to 1,000 books.”
This program was fashioned after the Hooked on Books Project, which was explained to Devries by that project’s director, Janet Jury, of New Hartford.
The library has received other grants in addition to the Libri foundation grant. Sen. Jim Seward secured a $10,0000 grant to repair the library roof and three computers were donated to the library from the Gates Foundation.
Two events are scheduled to take place before the Christmas season, Devries said, including another commemorative chocolate sale, beginning Nov. 17, with $5 bars of chocolate replicating the schoolhouse offered for purchase to the community.
Additionally, a basket give-away will take place Dec. 15. For a donation of 50 cents per ticket or four tickets for a dollar, participants will have the opportunity to take home one of three themed baskets, filled with teddy bears and holiday gift ideas.
