Amish family opens variety store
By Bruce Watson |
There’s a new business in the Richfield Springs area and the Amish family that operates it hopes that Windy Ridge Bulk and Variety Store has something that will appeal to your palate and your desire to purchase quality bulk foods.

When David and Laura Yoder learned that Scenic View Bulk and Variety Store on Dugan Road was closing, they decided there would be a need to provide a place for Amish and “English” families with a place to buy healthy, organic flours, seasonings, spices, vanilla, cheeses, meats, raisins, dates, pecans, walnuts and tea. Add to that maple syrup, Amish jams and jellies, canning and pickling mixes and you have Windy Ridge.
The Yoders, who now live on the Zawko Farm on County Route 24, have built, with lots of help from their Amish community, a separate building next to their house and officially opened last Monday, Nov. 3 with a sign next to the road that marks its location.
The front part of the building houses the store and the rear of the building has been set aside for deliveries of David’s three-year business of selling King’s Agri Seeds (corn, hay, oats, forages) to local farmers.
Finishing touches are still being made inside the store as the Yoders, along with their eldest daughter and sons, place finishing touches inside the store and complete the display units and shelving.
A pegboard and display tables will soon appear where boxes that still need unpacking lie. A white marker board will indicate when special delivery items like summer fruits and fall apples will arrive and when bake sales will be held.
Currently, the smell of fresh paint, along with the scents of seasonings, spices, teas, bulk packaged candy, chocolate chips, sugars and cereals greet you when you enter the store. There’s a wood stove to warm the store when cold weather comes and a refrigerator that contains pre-packaged John Martin Meats of Lancaster, Pa. that include bacon, hams and hamburger.
Cheeses include cheddar, Swiss, mozzarella, Muenster, Colby and “farmer’s” cheese, along with butter and cream cheese.
With the Thanksgiving and Christmas baking not far off, the Yoders are hoping that the baking and cooking supplies at Windy Ridge will appeal to people.
“We sell whole grains and quality bulk foods,” said David. “You might find prices cheaper at Wal-Mart, but our goods are better quality.”
Sizes and quantities range from a 50-pound sack of flour to smaller containers of spices, sugars, seasonings and dried fruits. Most items have stickers that say “No MSG (monosodium glutamate),” which is a common food additive that some experts believe to create a variety of health problems.
“If we don’t have something people are specifically looking for, we can special order items,” said Laura.
Besides bulk foods, the Yoders also sell items such as socks, gloves, Thomas Kincaid puzzles, sewing notions, yard supplies, boxed greeting cards, baby items and children’s books. Many of the items appeal to the plain lifestyle of the Amish community, yet the store has something for everyone.
The Yoders are planning an open house for Saturday, Dec. 6, with free coffee or tea and Laura’s special Amish glazed donuts. Amish bread and a variety of baked goods will also be available for sale that day.
Windy Ridge Bulk and Variety Store is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Occasionally, special hours and closings will be posted.
