Tax hike likely in Richfield
By Richard Palmer |
The local tax rate would jump from $3.24 to $3.75 per $1,000 assessed next year if the current preliminary budget is adopted by the Richfield town board. A public hearing on the $1,011,096 budget will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, at 7 p.m. at the town hall on James Street.
Town Supervisor Wayne King said most of the proposed increase is to cover higher fuel costs and asphalt used to pave roads. The town is also faced with a $200,000 expenditure to replace the Hyde Street bridge.
King said the bridge has been declared unsafe by the New York State Department of Transportation. The town maintains the bridge is within the village.
The bridge is on the north side of the village and is used by motorists traveling to and from the town of Warren. A detour will be set up.
Of the total budget, $502,821 is to be raised by taxes, $204,000 from estimated revenues, and $304,275 from other appropriations. The town is tentatively set to receive $43,500 in state aid, which is down $1,000 from this year’s $44,500.
The biggest pay hike will be for Justice Peter Brykailo Jr., from $11,500 to $14,000. However, this is a “wash” line item as Judge John Defino is retiring.
The salary of Highway Superintendent Michael Kress will go from $38,591 to $39,000. The town clerk’s salary will jump from $11,000 to $11,600. Town board members will each continue to receive $2,100 a year while the assessor’s salary will remain at $14,500.
