Local produce stand reopens

Summer has finally arrived and that means warm weather, cool swims,
12 hours of sunlight, vacations, camping, barbecues, and of course,
corn on the cob. Fortunately for area residents, fresh sweet corn is
grown and sold at West Gate, a newly opened produce stand in Richfield
Springs.
Sweet corn isn’t the only thing you can purchase at West Gate. In
fact, cabbage, squash, lettuce, tomatoes, strawberries, broccoli and an
array of other produce is grown and sold there.
Adam Mitchell, 26, of Richfield Springs recently purchased West
Gate, located one mile west of Prey Hill on Route 20. Formerly
L’hommedieu’s Produce, the stand sells fruits, vegetables, and hanging
flower baskets.
“I got a little of everything; we’ll see what sells,” said Mitchell,
who moved to the area when he was 21 and has owned a dairy farm in
Springfield since purchasing the old L’hommedieu property.
“We opened early to get the word around,” said Mitchell of West
Gate’s Memorial Day weekend grand opening. The produce stand had been
closed for over a year pending the sale of the property. “It might take
a while for people to find out it’s open again,” said Mitchell. “I try
to grow most of it.”
What can’t be home grown, such as, bananas and oranges, are
purchased from a produce vendor out of Syracuse. “I go through boxes
and boxes every morning and try to pick out the best stuff.”
Mitchell noted how popular L’hommedieu’s produce was with locals and said, “I’m going to try to do the same thing.”
