Petitions for the upcoming March 18 village elections are being accepted at the village of Richfield Springs clerk’s office, according to officials. There are three candidates currently interested in running. Incumbent John Garbera, will be seeking reelection to the two-year mayoral seat he has filled since the death of former mayor, Lenny Butler. Incumbent Trustee James Kurkowski, who has filled Garbera’s board seat since Garbera took over as acting mayor, and incumbent Trustee Ray Patrick, who is currently filling Scott Kurkowski’s position while he serves on active duty in Iraq, are also running, according to Town Clerk/Treasurer Jerry Buck. Kurkowski confirmed he will be seeking reelection to the board in March, as did Garbera. As of deadline on Tuesday, Patrick said he had not made up his mind as to whether or not he would be seeking reelection. Although last year Garbera had previously said he was unsure as to whether or not he would run again, earlier this week, he said he was willing to “give it another try. A lot of people talked to me about going for it, so I will try and see how things will work out.” After serving on the board for 14 years, Garbera said it would be difficult walking away from the men he currently serves with. “Jimmy took my place as trustee and Ray took over (for Scott). This is a good board,” he said. “I would like to stick with them. I don’t want to step down and run as a trustee. They’re doing a good job.” As per a legal ad provided by the clerk’s office, the annual election will be held Tuesday, March 18, at the town of Richfield hall on East James Street, in the village of Richfield Springs. Registered residents may cast their votes from 12-9 p.m. Anyone interested in vying for a board seat may pick up a petition at the clerk’s office. All petitions must be submitted by Feb. 12, according to Garbera.
