The bell may be tolling but few people are answering its call for help, according to representatives of the Salvation Army. As a result, a different tactical procedure has been drawn. As technology advances, changing the scope of reality from tangible to virtual, the bell ringers that have become synonymous with the Christmas season are taking their fundraising effort on line. With the number of volunteers plunging faster than December temperatures in central New York, the Salvation Army has found a savvier, not to mention warmer, way to enlist volunteers for fundraising. The Army’s Online Red Kettle Campaign provides people with the opportunity to host their own red kettle page, which provides a link for visitors to make a donation and a gauge that shows how close to a predetermined goal the volunteer is nearing. Donations are generated through an email campaign by the volunteer with the kettle page. To set up your cyber kettle, go to www.onlineredkettle.org. If you would like to ring a bell in real time, contact 877-7644-7259 or go to www.redkettles.org.
