Food for the soul may be the fare offered normally at local churches, but a turkey dinner with all the trimmings and a full heaping of friendly faces, are on the menu for this coming Thanksgiving as three area congregations plan for a third annual event at the Church of Christ Uniting in Richfield Springs. “This is for anybody,” said Shirley Dreis, a member of Church of Christ Uniting. “If you don’t have family nearby, or want to join in some fellowship, come in and join us.” Local residents, whether they belong to these churches or not, are invited to partake in a Thanksgiving feast hosted by Church of Christ Uniting, St. John’s Church and St. Joseph’s Church on Thanksgiving Day, from 12-2 p.m. While reservations are required, Dreis said there is no charge for the dinner, and take-outs are also available. “This is the third year we’ve done it,” Dreis said. “We started it because we thought there are a lot of people alone on Thanksgiving. “We thought they might want to get together and eat and chat with other people.” The first few years, the effort has been slowly growing, she said, noting that, “we have plenty of volunteers. For a while, we had more workers than people coming to eat.” Along with a surplus of volunteers, Dreis said they do not need donations of food or desserts. “The three churches are supplying everything. Each church will be responsible for a different part of the meal,” she said. The meal will include turkey and all the trimmings, desserts and beverages. Fliers have been displayed at each of the churches, and at the food pantry and nutrition center, which is located at the Vets Club on Lake Street. For more information, call St. Joseph’s Church, 315-858-1682, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 315-858-1121, or the Church of Christ Uniting, 315-858-1553. “We won’t be serving a turkey dinner on Thanksgiving, but we’ll be serving spiritual fellowship with eternal values in mind,” said Pastor Alan Miller, of the Richfield Springs Bible Church, on Church Street. Their service is scheduled for Thanksgiving Eve at 7 p.m.
