In the annual spring members meeting, held at Baker’s Beach, Saturday, June 16, the Canadarago Lake Improvement Association (CLIA) members unanimously elected Dr. Pamela Lea, DVM, to a seat on the association’s Board of Directors. CLIA President Rod Sluyter recommended Lea’s election. “She will bring many additional strengths to an already strong board,” Sluyter said. At the meeting, Sluyter chronicled the association’s efforts over the past three years working with Sen. James Seward and Assemblyman William Magee to pass legislation authorizing the creation of a lake district. Sluyter said the lake district is needed because only a political entity (not a non-profit group) can accept grant money and assess the lake residents to enable repairs to be made to the Panther Mountain Dam. The dam needs repair to more effectively control the lake level. “We are extremely disappointed with the governor’s veto, although we understand the reasons he gave,” Sluyter told the 75 members at the meeting. Sluyter also outlined several “next steps” the association will undertake, beginning with a meeting among representatives of the towns of Richfield, Otsego and Exeter, Otsego County officials, and staff from the governor’s office. Sluyter announced that the association will install electronic monitoring equipment to record amounts of rainfall and the subsequent change in lake levels. This accurate, scientific data will be used to document lake level fluctuations and will be helpful in applying for grants to repair the dam. In other business, association members approved the 2007 budget and heard reports on clearing the obstructions in Oaks Creek, the lake water clarity, and the booming fish population. The next membership meeting is scheduled for Aug. 25, at Baker’s Beach. CLIA works on behalf of all of the lake property owners and your membership is a way to ensure that we have your support.
