Boy Scouts have Arctic owl campout
|
The Boy Scouts of Troop 14, of Richfield Springs, had their Arctic owl campout, Feb. 22-24. The boys have to sleep in a man-made shelter the first night and a tent the next night. The boys did such a good job on the shelters, they slept in them both nights. The troop does many things on this tradition of the Arctic owl. Shelters, snowshoeing, cooking meals, including one meal with no cooking utensils (using a stick or whatever Mother Nature offers). A small cabin helped keep things warm and dry, such as gloves, boots and the adults. This is one of many outings the troop does to teach the boys and the leaders about survival skills, cooking in the outdoors and fun camping in the winter conditions. It was a complete success due to a great group of kids. There were no cold related problems (frostbite) and no injuries of any sort. Not bad for a group of 10 to 13-year-olds.
