Hats and mittens are being collected at this month’s Cooperstown Area Christian Woman’s Club luncheon, scheduled for 11:30 at the Tally-Ho Restaurant, on Main Street in Richfield Springs, Monday, Dec. 11. The hats and mittens will adorn a Christmas tree, which will then be presented to the Milford Head Start program. According to Bea Worden, the Bible study group meets monthly, providing a non-denominational environment for people to gather to fellowship in the name of God. Each month, the luncheon includes a speaker and presentation. This month, Worden said speaker Linda Fanton, from Wellsville, will be talking about the children in her life. The focus of the presentation is “how to become saved,” Richfield Springs resident Peg Couchman said. Fanton will also be providing a musical program. “We all came up with this idea to do a special project at Christmas time,” said Couchman. “Sometimes we have a fashion show, sometimes we have a demonstration, like a weaver. We usually do something to entertain the people, or something to do as a whole group. It’s a real party atmosphere.” In the past, Christmas projects have kept with the tree theme, although decorations have varied. “In the past, we’ve done ornament trees, where everyone made an ornament and decorated the tree with that. Then we delivered the tree with all the ornaments. A couple of times we did that for Rosewood,” said Worden. Anyone is invited to the luncheon, there is no such status as “member,” Couchman said. “If you come to our luncheon, you’re a member. There is no way to join, no dues. We’re open to everyone.” Normally between 50 to 60 people attend the luncheon, which is $8.50 per person, along with a donation of a hat or mittens or gloves to be placed on the tree. The Christian Woman’s Club is part of the Stonecroft Ministries, which is an outreach ministry empowered by tens of thousands of volunteers around the world. Their goal is to teach women how to reach out to their communities to connect with one another in the name of God. In addition to scheduling luncheons, Bible study groups meet regularly. The Cooperstown branch meets every third Monday of the month at the Tally-Ho, except between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
