COOPERSTOWN – Nineteenth century fair entertainments, tethered balloon rides, period music, and gourmet cuisine will begin the festivities on Friday, July 21, as the board and staff of the New York State Historical Association presents its third annual benefit gala, beginning at 6 p.m. on the grounds of the Farmers’ Museum. This informal event, Not Your Grandma’s Gala, celebrates the life and work of Grandma Moses as illustrated in Fenimore Art Museum’s featured season exhibition, Grandma Moses: Grandmother to the Nation. Proceeds of the gala will fund future education programs of the New York State Historical Association. “We are very excited about this year’s gala as it breaks with the tradition and formality of past events,” said Shelley T. Graham, committee co-chair. “Leave your black tie at home and bring along your dancing shoes for a charming evening filled with the sights, sounds, tastes and entertainment of Grandma Moses’ time.” The evening features a myriad of activities in the theme of a country fair, including hot-air balloon rides, a silent auction, 19th-century entertainments, rides on the newly opened Empire State Carousel, and gourmet country fare, under the Big Top on the Creamery Green at the Farmers’ Museum from 6-8 p.m. Guests are welcome to preview the exhibition Grandma Moses: Grandmother to the Nation at Fenimore Art Museum from 4-6 p.m. At 8 p.m., the event will move into the Louis C. Jones Center in the Main Barn for a welcome by Anne G. Older, chairman of the board of trustees and opening remarks by D. Stephen Elliott, president, and Dr. Paul D’Ambrosio, vice president and chief curator. Dancing to the music of the Peter Blue Band and an assortment of country fair desserts culminate the evening. Shuttle service will be provided between the Yellow Trolley lot, located north of Fenimore Art Museum, and the Farmers’ Museum from 5-6:30 p.m. and 10-11:30 p.m. Tickets for Not Your Grandma’s Gala are $175 each or $325 for a set of two.
