Recently, the Section III volleyball committee honored former
Richfield Springs Central School physical education teacher Barbara
Horwald for her 33 years of service to the Section III Girls Volleyball
Committee.
Horwald began teaching at RSCS in 1972 and coached a variety of
sports over the course of her career, including varsity and JV field
hockey, boys and girls track and field, JV and varsity basketball, JV
and varsity cheerleading, boys volleyball, and girls JV and varsity
volleyball.
While at RSCS, she spent 21 years representing the Center State
Conference of Section III volleyball as Class D representative to the
Section III volleyball committee. She served on several committees
within Section III and held positions overseeing the modified sports
by-laws and extended eligibility requirements for the Center State
Conference League to the Athletic Council.
While at RSCS, Horwald was a class advisor and led many classes
through their years in high school, advising them through Junior Proms
and Senior Snowballs and class trips. She also served as athletic
director at RSCS from 1981-1987 and 1990-1996. In retirement, Horwald
continues to be interested in the sports program at RSCS through the
efforts of the Sports Booster Club.
“Miss Horwald was a dedicated teacher and coach. She took a personal
interest in the students, and RSCS was a big part of her life.
She was a selfless individual, and I am not surprised that Section III
gave her this award,” said former high school principal Marston Erwin.
“She served the Richfield Springs Central School District very well.”
