VAN HORNESVILLE – A lesson in local government brought six Owen D.
Young Central School seniors out in the rain last week to attend a
school board meeting at the urging of their social studies teacher,
Christopher Hutchinson.
The seniors included Charlie Magnone, 17, who, during the public
comments portion of the meeting, questioned Superintendent James
Christmann regarding an issue over lunch periods.
Christmann responded that they would meet to discuss it at another time.
Resident Matthew Jacoby, and president of the Quality Education
Study Group, requested the board change their meeting location to
accommodate larger crowds. He reminded the board he has been requesting
a different meeting area for over a year.
When Board of Education President Brenda Hugick told Jacoby that the
board met in the library alcove because the acoustics in the auditorium
were not good, Jacoby suggested a classroom as an alternative to the
alcove.
He also asked that the board post the full minutes, not the
abbreviated minutes, on its website. The school’s website is
www.odyoung-csd.k12.ny.us/.
Other seniors attending the meeting where Hutchinson briefed the
board on this year’s progress included Chris Strain, 17, Darren Banks,
17, Kayla Mosher, 18, Kim Grescheck, 17 and Amee Mayack, 16.
Goals for the 2005-06 school year, Hutchinson said, included
providing the students with an education that would enable them to pass
the New York State Regents Exam on the first try and to teach the
students “how to write and write well.”
