Springfield resident Keith McCarty felt his landslide victory in
last week’s Republican primary for Otsego County Board of
Representatives’ District 9 position was incredible. “It’s amazing; I’m
speechless,” McCarty said.
McCarty received 200 votes while Richfield Springs resident Alex
Shields got 47, and Richfield resident John Donnolly was on 26 ballots
cast.
McCarty moves on to the general election in November and will face
Democrat Bill Elsey, also of Springfield, for the right to represent
Richfield and Springfield on the county board.
McCarty said he wants to start attending some of the county’s
meetings to better familiarize himself with the issues. “I’d like to
thank everyone for their support, and, hopefully, we can do it again in
November.”
Springfield Supervisor Tom Armstrong also won the primary in a
landslide. The incumbent received 117 votes, while challenger Alan
Ulrich got 60 votes. Ulrich also filed an Independent petition, so he
will face-off with Armstrong again in the general election.
Armstrong feels he is in good shape for the November election. “I’m
very pleased the town supported me the way they did,” he said. “I feel
people have confidence in me.”
Armstrong, a former business owner in Richfield Springs, said that
prior experience serves him well. “I know what it is to run a business
and keep a payroll,” he said. “It’s not a learning game, either you
know it or you don’t.”
Ulrich said he was a little disappointed with the results of the
primary. “I really feel they (the voters) should know the issues, which
are the finances,” he said. “They need to be put in order.”
Ulrich said he hopes to get his message out before the general election and wanted to thank his supporters.
Columbia Supervisor George Weiss will now be unopposed in November’s
election, as he beat John Clark in the primary, 186-101. “I was deeply
humbled by the people’s support because I’ve been under attack by the
former supervisor and the Planning Board chairman,” Weiss said.
Weiss has been pushing for zoning law changes and hopes his victory
will bring that about, and he plans on keeping the town clerk’s office
at her home and not moving it to the town building. “She’s been serving
the public for 26 years from there.”
